The Joya guide to life between color appointments
Fresh color is a good feeling. Keeping it beautiful takes a little care, and a routine that makes sense for your shade.
Start with the everyday basics, then find your color below.
Three Habits Worth Keeping
Wash gently.
Choose a color-safe shampoo that also suits your scalp. Focus on cleansing your roots, let the lather rinse through your lengths and follow with conditioner. Use comfortably lukewarm water rather than a steamy rinse.
You can space out washes to help preserve your color, but let your scalp guide you. Itching, discomfort and buildup aren’t worth an extra day.
Turn down the heat.
Use heat protectant before styling, choose the lowest effective temperature and avoid repeatedly going over the same section. Heat protectant helps reduce damage; it doesn’t make high temperatures harmless.
Keep your lengths cared for.
Gently detangle from the ends upward, condition regularly and keep up with trims. Your stylist can recommend a mask or repair treatment based on what your hair needs.
Find Your Shade
Blonde & Lightened
For the bright pieces, buttery ribbons and all-over blondes.
Maintaining blonde involves two things: caring for lightened hair and keeping your preferred tone.
Your gloss gradually fades, which can reveal more of the warmth underneath. That doesn’t always mean you need more bleach, a gloss appointment may be enough to refresh your blonde.
About purple shampoo: It helps neutralize yellow tones. It won’t make your hair lighter, remove every kind of brassiness or replace a custom gloss. Overusing it can leave porous ends looking dull, lavender or uneven.
Golden and honey blondes may not need it at all. Ask your stylist what to use and how often.
Your maintenance may include: glosses, trims, conditioning or repair treatments, and lightening appointments spaced for your particular service. Bleach retouches require a more specific schedule, so follow your stylist’s timing.
Brunette & Dimensional
Chocolate, espresso, caramel and everything in between.
Brunette color can lose richness over time, particularly on previously lightened lengths. A gloss can refresh depth, tone and shine between larger appointments.
If your hair starts looking warmer, lighter or flatter than you’d like, check in before reaching for a toning shampoo. Blue shampoo isn’t right for every brunette, and some warmth may be part of the dimension you love.
Your maintenance may include: gloss refreshes, root touch-ups and occasional highlights or lowlights to maintain your balance of light and depth.
Red & Copper
For the shades that like a little extra attention.
Reds and coppers can show fading noticeably. Gentle washing, less heat and regular refreshes help maintain their vibrancy.
A color-depositing conditioner may be helpful, but the shade matters. The wrong formula can push your copper too orange, your red too pink or your ends darker than intended.
Ask us to choose one with you and explain how to apply it evenly.
Your maintenance may include: root color, glosses and a stylist-approved color-depositing product between visits.
Vivids & Pastels
Your pink era. Your blue era. Your whatever-you-feel-like era.
Vivid color is designed to evolve. How quickly it fades depends on the shade, formula, condition of your hair and your routine. Soft pastels generally need refreshing sooner than deeper, saturated colors.
For the best wear:
Wash with cool water and the shampoo your stylist recommends.
Space out washes as your scalp comfortably allows.
Keep heat styling gentle.
Avoid clarifying or color-removing products unless advised.
Follow your stylist’s washing instructions if you wear multiple colors.
Fresh vivids may transfer onto towels, pillowcases and clothing, especially when wet. Choose fabrics you won’t mind getting a little colorful.
Your maintenance may include: color refreshes and a matching take-home conditioner. Lightening is only needed when your regrowth or next color plan calls for it.
Root Color & Gray Coverage
For a consistent shade from roots to ends.
Your touch-up schedule depends on your growth rate, contrast and how much regrowth you like to see.
Temporary root powders or sprays can help between appointments.
Before using permanent color at home, check in with us. Overlapping it onto previously colored hair can create buildup, uneven results and a more involved salon visit later.
Your maintenance may include: root touch-ups, with a separate gloss for the lengths when needed.
What About Lived-In Color?
A softer grow-out can mean more time between highlighting appointments. Your tone, ends and haircut may still need attention along the way.
Think of maintenance as a menu: you might need a gloss and trim long before you need another full blonding service.
We’ll help you choose the appointment that fits what your hair needs now.
The Things That Can Sneak Up on Your Color
Hot tools: Use heat protectant, lower the temperature and limit repeated passes.
Long days in the sun: Wear a hat or scarf to help reduce exposure and fading. Protect exposed areas of your scalp, too.
Pools & salt water: Wet your hair with fresh water before swimming, rinse afterward and cleanse as recommended. A swim cap offers more protection.
Mineral buildup: Tell us if you have well water or notice unexpected dullness, coating or discoloration. You may need a targeted treatment.
The wrong toning product: Check with your stylist before adding purple shampoo, blue shampoo or a color-depositing mask.
Regular swimmer? Well water at home? Hot tools every morning? Let us know. Your routine helps us plan your color and recommend care that fits.
Before You Try to “Fix” It
Send us a message first.
Dish soap, baking soda, at-home bleach and random color removers can leave you with dryness, uneven color or a bigger correction than you started with.
A clear photo in natural light and a quick explanation of what’s changed can help us recommend your next step.
This is especially helpful if you notice sudden discoloration, significant breakage or a dramatic change in how your hair feels.
What Should I Book?
“My tone has faded, but I still like my brightness and placement.”
Ask about a gloss refresh.
“My roots are showing, but my lengths still look good.”
Ask about a root touch-up. Let us know whether you mean gray coverage, base color or a bleach retouch.
“My vivid is looking softer than I want.”
Ask about a vivid refresh. You may not need additional lightening.
“I love my color, but my ends feel rough and my shape is gone.”
A haircut and a recommended treatment may be your next step.
“I’m ready for something completely different.”
Start with a consultation, especially if you’re changing from dark to light or moving between vivid shades.
Service names and timing can vary, so reach out if you’re unsure what to select.
