A little love for your new length: Joya extension care guide

Your Joya extension care guide

You’ve got the hair. Let’s keep it feeling as good as it looks.

A little daily care goes a long way toward keeping your extensions soft, comfortable and tangle-free. Here’s how to give your new lengths the love they deserve.

Wash Day Ritual

Gentle, thorough and never rushed.

  • Brush out tangles before stepping into the shower.

  • Keep your hair flowing downward while washing, no piling it on top of your head.

  • Gently massage shampoo into your scalp with your fingertips, taking care around bonds and rows.

  • Let the suds rinse through your lengths.

  • Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths down, keeping it away from attachment points.

  • Rinse thoroughly, especially around and between your rows.

After washing, gently squeeze out excess water and blot with a towel. Skip the rubbing and twisting.

Dry With Care

Your drying routine depends on your extension method, so follow the instructions your Joya stylist gives you.

For wefts, gently lift each row and dry the attachment area thoroughly. Even when your lengths can air-dry, don’t leave moisture sitting around your attachments.

For K-tips, handle wet hair gently and follow your stylist’s drying recommendations for your specific bonds.

Whatever your method, always go to bed with completely dry hair. Damp extensions and a night of tossing and turning can lead to tangling and matting.

Brush, Gently

A little attention in the morning and before bed makes all the difference.

Use an extension-friendly brush, starting at the ends and working upward in small sections. Support the hair near your attachments with your free hand to keep tension off your scalp.

Give your attachment areas some attention, too:

  • K-tips: Gently separate individual bonds as your stylist has shown you to keep neighboring pieces from tangling together.

  • Wefts: Brush each section carefully, including the natural hair between your rows, without catching or pulling on the attachments.

If you find a stubborn tangle near your scalp, reach out instead of trying to force your brush through it.

Beauty Sleep

Your bedtime routine can be simple:

  1. Make sure your hair is completely dry.

  2. Gently brush through it.

  3. Secure it in a loose braid or low ponytail

  4. Rest on a silk or satin pillowcase to help reduce friction.

Think soft, loose and comfortable. Nothing that pulls at your roots.

Bring the Heat, With Care

Waves, curls, a bouncy blowout, we love options.

Always apply heat protectant and use the lowest effective temperature. Work in sections so you don’t need to pass over the same pieces repeatedly.

Keep hot tools away from all attachment points, especially K-tip bonds. Direct heat can soften or damage the keratin.

Your extensions don’t receive oils from your scalp the way your natural hair does, so a gentle styling routine helps keep the lengths feeling soft.

Your Care Lineup

Your stylist can help you choose products suited to your extension hair and attachment method. Your everyday essentials may include:

  • Extension-friendly shampoo

  • Moisturizing conditioner

  • Leave-in conditioner or detangler

  • Heat protectant

  • Lightweight serum or oil for the ends

  • Extension-friendly brush

Keep conditioner, masks and oils through your mid-lengths and ends, away from bonds and attachment points.

Pool Days & Salty Hair

A little planning helps protect your extensions during a swim.

Before swimming, secure your hair in a braid or another protective style and avoid letting it become a giant wet knot. If you wet your hair with fresh water or layer on some conditioner before going for a dip, even better.

We do not recommend snorkeling or scuba diving in extensions as it can cause major tangling from the pressure of the mask on extensions.

After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water as soon as you can. Wash and condition when appropriate, gently detangle and make sure your attachment areas dry completely.

Chlorine, salt water and minerals can affect your extensions’ texture and color. If swimming is a regular part of your routine, let your stylist know so we can tailor your care plan.

A Little SPF Awareness

Keep the sun protection, just be mindful of where your hair rests.

Some sunscreens can discolor extension hair, particularly lighter shades.

If you wear blonde extensions, we recommend checking the ingredient list on your sunscreen and avoiding products containing:

  • Avobenzone

  • Octocrylene

  • Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3)

  • Octinoxate (Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate)

  • Homosalate

And no, we're definitely not telling you to skip SPF ☀️ Instead, look for a sunscreen without these ingredients, keep your extensions pulled up and away from freshly applied sunscreen, and allow your sunscreen to fully absorb before letting your hair down. Wash sunscreen from your hands before handling your hair.

Sweat Sessions

Before working out, gently secure your hair in a loose braid or comfortable style that doesn’t pull on your attachments.

Afterward, let your hair down and dry any damp roots or attachment areas. Cleanse as needed, and avoid leaving sweaty hair bundled in a tight bun.

A Few Things to Skip

  • Sleeping with damp hair

  • Pulling a brush through tangles

  • Applying oils or heavy conditioner directly to attachments

  • Placing hot tools against bonds

  • Leaving wet hair tangled after swimming

  • Picking at bonds or attempting your own removal

  • Putting off maintenance appointments

  • Ignoring pulling, pain or matting

If something feels off, we want to hear from you.

Different Methods, A Little Different Love

K-Tip Extensions

Individual bonds need to stay gently separated. Brush regularly, keep heavy products away from the bonds and avoid direct heat on the keratin.

As your hair grows, the bonds will move farther from your scalp. Your stylist will explain your expected wear time and when to schedule professional removal or replacement.

Weft Extensions

Keep your scalp clean around and between your rows, rinse thoroughly and fully dry the attachment areas after washing.

Brush in sections, support your roots and keep tension off the rows. Your maintenance appointments help us manage grow-out and check the health of your natural hair.

How Long Will They Last?

Your extension hair’s lifespan and your maintenance schedule are two different things.

How long the hair lasts depends on the brand, method, home care, styling habits and lifestyle. Some hair can be reused at maintenance appointments; other methods require new hair when it’s time to reinstall.

Your stylist will walk you through what to expect, including your next appointment and when replacement may be needed.
